Halloween

Posted by Siobhan McIlfatrick on

Some believe that many Halloween traditions originate from Celtic harvest festivals which have possible pagan roots, in particular the Gaelic Festival Samhain, opposing views are that Halloween began independently as a Christian Holiday.

Trick or treating, is a Halloween tradition where children knock on doors seeking a treat, in some cases where a treat is not provided the child will play a prank, one well known Halloween prank is to throw uncooked eggs at the doors of houses where a treat was not provided. Other activities associated with Halloween include; dressing up, house decoration, bonfires, watching horror films and visiting haunted attractions to name but a few. Trick or treating traditionally began in the Middle-Ages, children and sometimes poor adults dressed up in costumes and went around door to door begging for food or money in exchange for songs and prayers

In some countries Christians attend church services and light candles at the graves of the dead, others abstain from eating meat on the Eve of Halloween.
